Its colonization speed and the ease with which it spreads from fruit to fruit make it an especially dangerous adversary in high-production seasons like those in the Lleida plain and the Huesca strip.<\/p><p data-path-to-node=\"0\">Understanding how it acts, under which conditions it proliferates, and which tools exist to control it is essential to protect product quality and reduce economic losses.<\/p><h2><strong>What is <em>Geotrichum<\/em> and how does it infect fruit?<\/strong><\/h2><div id=\"model-response-message-contentr_23fbc9302c444898\" class=\"markdown markdown-main-panel enable-updated-hr-color\" dir=\"ltr\" aria-live=\"polite\"><p data-path-to-node=\"0\"><em>Geotrichum candidum<\/em> is a fungus that lives naturally in the soil, in decaying organic matter, and in the water of rivers and irrigation ditches. Symptoms of<em> Geotrichum<\/em> in stone fruit are quite characteristic once you know what to look for:<\/p><ul><li data-path-to-node=\"1\"><strong>Watery lesions<\/strong>: the fruit skin shows soft, pale, or slightly whitish areas with a wet appearance. When in doubt, a laboratory diagnosis confirms the causal agent and helps adjust the control strategy.<\/p><div id=\"model-response-message-contentr_31f2e825a799b080\" class=\"markdown markdown-main-panel enable-updated-hr-color\" dir=\"ltr\" aria-live=\"polite\"><h3 data-path-to-node=\"0\"><strong>Risk factors in the stone fruit season<\/strong><\/h3><div id=\"model-response-message-contentr_92e67381f8b1a07a\" class=\"markdown markdown-main-panel enable-updated-hr-color\" dir=\"ltr\" aria-live=\"polite\"><p data-path-to-node=\"0\">Not all fruit carries the same risk. There are conditions that significantly increase the probability of issues with <em>Geotrichum<\/em>:<\/p><p data-path-to-node=\"1\"><strong>In the field:<\/strong><\/p><ul><li data-path-to-node=\"2,0,0\">Harvesting under extreme heat conditions (high pulp temperature at the time of picking).<\/li><li data-path-to-node=\"2,0,0\">Overripe fruit or fruit with mechanical damage from hail, wind, or friction.<\/li><li data-path-to-node=\"2,0,0\">Soils with a high inoculum load due to previous infections or accumulation of organic debris.<\/li><\/ul><p data-path-to-node=\"3\"><strong>In postharvest:<\/strong><\/p><ul><li data-path-to-node=\"4,0,0\">Delays between harvest and entry into the cold storage room (every hour counts at 30 \u00b0C).<\/li><li data-path-to-node=\"4,0,0\">Washing water with a high organic load.<\/li><li data-path-to-node=\"4,0,0\">Cold rooms, bins, or packing machinery with poor sanitization between seasons.<\/li><li data-path-to-node=\"4,0,0\">Mixing fruit with different stages of ripeness on the same pallet.<\/li><\/ul><p data-path-to-node=\"5\">In seasons where the harvest is concentrated into a few days \u2014which is common when temperatures soar in July\u2014 logistical pressure can lead to overlooking precooling times, creating the perfect scenario for <em>Geotrichum<\/em> to break out.<\/p><div id=\"model-response-message-contentr_279a72f132c0bf11\" class=\"markdown markdown-main-panel enable-updated-hr-color\" dir=\"ltr\" aria-live=\"polite\"><h2 data-path-to-node=\"0\"><strong>Control strategy: field, cold storage, and packing line<\/strong><\/h2><div id=\"model-response-message-contentr_8143db1d1d603a82\" class=\"markdown markdown-main-panel enable-updated-hr-color\" dir=\"ltr\" aria-live=\"polite\"><p data-path-to-node=\"0\">The control of <em>Geotrichum<\/em> must be approached in an integrated manner, as no single measure is sufficient on its own.<\/p><h3 data-path-to-node=\"1\"><strong>Preventive measures in the field<\/strong><\/h3><ul><li data-path-to-node=\"2,0,0\"><strong>Adjusted harvest schedule<\/strong>: avoid picking overripe fruit. Working with objective ripeness indexes (penetrometry, refractometric index) helps make the decision at the optimal time.<\/li><li data-path-to-node=\"2,0,0\"><strong>Careful handling<\/strong>: minimize bumps and friction during harvest and transport to the packing house. Wounds are the primary entry point for the fungus.<\/li><li data-path-to-node=\"2,0,0\"><strong>Field hygiene<\/strong>: remove fallen fruit and organic debris that act as an inoculum reservoir.<\/li><\/ul><h3 data-path-to-node=\"3\"><strong>Precooling and cold chain<\/strong><\/h3><p data-path-to-node=\"3\">Cold is the most effective tool against <em>Geotrichum<\/em>. Below 5 \u00b0C, the growth of the fungus slows down considerably (it can grow even at temperatures close to 0 \u00b0C, albeit very slowly). For this reason, maintaining an uninterrupted cold chain \u2014especially during loading and unloading\u2014 is just as important as the initial precooling.<\/p><p data-path-to-node=\"3\">The objective is to reduce the pulp temperature to this range as soon as possible after harvest \u2014ideally in less than 6 hours\u2014 and keep it stable throughout storage and transport.<\/p><h3 data-path-to-node=\"4\"><strong>Sanitization of the packing house and machinery<\/strong><\/h3><ul><li data-path-to-node=\"5,0,0\">Cleaning and disinfection of cold rooms, bins, belts, and rollers before the start of the season.<\/li><li data-path-to-node=\"5,0,0\">Frequent changing or filtering of the washing water on the packing line, along with the use of authorized disinfecting agents.<\/li><li data-path-to-node=\"5,0,0\">Periodic inspection of water distribution systems to avoid dead zones with accumulation of organic matter.<\/li><\/ul><h3 data-path-to-node=\"6\"><strong>Postharvest fungicide treatments<\/strong><\/h3><p data-path-to-node=\"6\">There are authorized active ingredients for the postharvest treatment of stone fruit against fungi of the genus <em>Geotrichum<\/em> and other common pathogens such as <em>Monilinia<\/em> or <em>Penicillium<\/em>. The most relevant groups include:<\/p><div id=\"model-response-message-contentr_4a3a19e5936efdd1\" class=\"markdown markdown-main-panel enable-updated-hr-color\" dir=\"ltr\" aria-live=\"polite\"><ul><li data-path-to-node=\"0\"><strong>Fludioxonil<\/strong>: contact fungicide with a good safety profile.<\/li><li data-path-to-node=\"0\"><strong>Pyrimethanil<\/strong>: with systemic action, it complements contact products well.<\/li><li data-path-to-node=\"0\"><strong>Potassium and sodium bicarbonate<\/strong>: a low environmental impact alternative, with variable efficacy depending on the inoculum pressure.<\/li><\/ul><\/div><p data-path-to-node=\"8\">The choice of active ingredient and dosage must always be adjusted to current regulations and the Maximum Residue Limits (MRLs) required by the destination market.
